Rat Island Rowing and Sculling Club Dinner Meeting Minutes December 13, 2016
Call to Order/Roll Call: Peggy Myre called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. at the Northwest Maritime Center.
Board members present: John Collins, Nancy Erreca, Steve Jefferies, Karen Michaud, Michele Olsen, Cara Warren
Board members absent: Don Berger, Jim Buckley
Also present: About 40 other members and guests
Introduction: Peggy welcomed us and she always appreciates input from members. She would like to see the coaching program continue and announced John Collins and Katie Franco formed a race committee for next season.
Treasurer’s Report: John reported that he anticipates the next three month’s expenses to be $10,416. If that is correct we will have spent $21,909.40 and our budget was $21,920 so we will be $10.60 under budget for the fiscal year. Revenue was $3,559 more than budgeted because of more members and $1,500 of merchandise profit. Converting the tiller launch to a steering wheel is coming in at $1,675 which is just under budget. Gordon Misselt made the original seat for this boat so John converted it into an award to recognize the outstanding launch driver of the year. This year’s winner is Kristin Smith.
Race and Training: John Collins, Katie Franco and Jim Buckley formed a RAT committee and would like to know who is interested in racing and participating in a training program. There are sprints, regionals and other races starting in March.
Sequim Bay Rowing Club: The club is very active and they row every day. They have training boats and our Juan de Fuca. Sequim Bay is more protected than our water. They row out of the John Wayne Marina and welcome us to be guest rowers or bring our own boat to row.
Steve Chapin explained that his work space is a mixed use building and there are problems with vapor migration and fire separation issues that need to be dealt with. John said our club mission statement is to preserve the legacy of wooden boats and the board will be looking for ways to collaborate with Steve to find a long term solution.
Steve announced there is a Pocock Rowing Foundation conference in February about the Joy of Sculling.
Appreciation: Peggy thanked several members:
Ted Shoulberg for all the work he did and for being row master.
Kathleen Sailer for being assistant row master and managing the merchandise.
Jim Mason for all his maintenance work.
Kathleen Sailer and Toni Davison for the coaching program.
All the coxes and Katie Franco for her encouraging emails.
Steve Jefferies for training and taking care of the launches.
Kristin Smith for launching and other tasks.
Jim Costello for all of his help to the club.
Karen Michaud presented the Bent Skeg Award to Kristin Smith for being the most improved rower for the season.
Board Election: The slate was elected and included: Dennis Cartwright, Sally Giesler, Kim Matthews, Kathleen Sailer, Kristin Smith and Frank Ward.
Adjournment: There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Date of next meeting: Monday, January 9th at NWMC.
