Rowing in the open water of Port Townsend Bay, it’s reassuring to have a launch driver along on scheduled rows. Launch drivers aren’t just there to perform rescue operations in case of capsize or man overboard situations, they also play a great preventative role, such as keeping an eye out for floating obstacles and boat traffic. Before the boats even leave the boathouse, it is up to the launch driver to assess the conditions (wind, waves, fog, etc.), determine if it’s safe for us to go out, and call us if it isn’t.
